My Dad (a work in progress for his birthday)

Stearin’ the wheel of a roarin machine
Coming in close to a John Deere Green
Didn’t have to go to Disney to find Mr. Toad
We had lots of fun on a dirt farm road

In the sand in a primer gray truck
I couldn’t stop or we’d get stuck
Learned how to drive out there with the cows
If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t know how

I’m a natural born driver
Taught by my dad
Those were some of the best times
I’d ever had

Slinging a pistol, before I was three
Shot up some cans, set there for me
BB’s bouncing off buckets in the back yard
Shattering a rock, that turned out to be tar

Taught me load, taught me to aim
Taught me the gun, and each parts name
Never killed a rabbit, bird or coyote
But on my first hunt, I’m glad you came with me.

I’m a natural born shooter
Taught by my dad
Those were some of the best times
I’d ever had.

Under the oak trees, swinging in time
Words floating by me, some yours, some mine
Sometimes we’d debate, sometimes we’d agree
But I never doubted how much you loved me.

I’m a natural born talker
Take after my dad
And those were some of the best times
I’d ever had
