Christmas dilemma

Have you ever felt like the Santa thing has got to stop? I don't mean it like that, but I feel like a liar every year. My oldest questioned me about Santa the other day. In my mind I thought he knows, he has to know, he's 11 years old. But never the less, I said of course he's real. What if he doesn't know? He's so smart how could he not. But if I slip up and ruin the last of the childhood mysteries, I am a bad mother. Maybe he's playing along for my sake. I still play along. So maybe that's all it is. I feel like the grinch. Taking away Christmas. How old were your kids when they stopped believing?

I don't think true belieivers ever stop believing. There comes a point, when you realize its impossible, but at the same time you still want to believe SO much. Then you find out, but in the back of your mind, you still believe.
I was 12 when I did this, and my parents made the transition a little easier. We got to be Santa's helper, setting out the presents for the other kids (as Santa never wrote names on our presents, he drew little pictures. So we couldn't tell which ones were ours.) It was fun and helped the adjustment.
SO let him believe!

I want the bell to always ring for him, don't get me wrong. I just don't know how to explain away the holes in the Santa story, I always just say, I don't know I've never been to the north pole.

Don't know if this was the right thing or not, but we just told the kids that if they stopped believing in Santa then he obviously couldn't bring them gifts. Then of course there is the "Santa is the spirit of Christmas giving". Don't know if there is a right way or not, I just know that I still want to believe it all. Never really appreciated the Easter bunny - too much distraction from a very sacred day. But the jolly old elf simply adds to the wonder that is Christmas.

Clint told Slade last year only because Slade has jewish friends and was wondering about that and also because he realized that poor children don't get as much as rich kids - he didn't know why Santa would discriminate. So, it' been good to have Slade in the know, he helps us out and it's easier for us. We don't have to talk in code and sign anymore! I'm worried about Jack! He will truly feel duped if he doesn't already have a clue! He still loves doing special things for Santa!
